The human brain is designed to be curious and to have
desires, this forms questions and creates explorations. Photography can be used
as a tool to power curiosity by documenting different scenes and objects,
despite the fact that, often parts of the photographs created can be distorted
or out of the focus of the viewer’s gaze. Lacan describes the relationship of the
viewer and the gaze as “not one of objectification in which the spectator is
dominant, but one the radically disrupts the mastery of the viewing subject”
meaning, the viewer is no longer the one in control of how they are looking at
an image, as they have been caught in the trap of the gaze.

My work focuses on this idea of the gaze and how an image
that appears plain and simple can create more questions and doubts than another
image that has a great deal of detail. These enquires are all caused by the
subject matter. Each object is displayed in a way where nothing is hidden
except what, or if anything Is inside of it, this is the main disruption caused
to the viewing of the image.

‘Looking at, looking through’ is a body of work that experiments with the transparency of the image to represent photographic imprints of memory. Using traditional photographic processes in the darkroom, such as direct contact printing, has allowed for the transfer of images from one surface to another, replicating the way memories are imprinted in our minds.

When on a visit to Brighton, I found myself browsing through Snoopers Paradise, which is an emporium-style shop full of unique items. This is where I have discovered a stack of slide films encased in tape, making it very hard to access the images within. Later, after purchasing these slides, I unravelled the tape to find out that the images within were all displaying places in Cornwall that I recognised through years of visiting family and enjoying summer holidays. Each slide was marked with handwritten place names documenting the travels of the original owner.

Slide film has an inherent association with family, making the viewing an event for everyone to participate in. The atmosphere created when partaking in this event has a nostalgic familiarity. Imperfections within the images are often created due to the nature of how they are captured. Thus, creating liminal spaces in the faded traces of images, opening room for the searching of smaller details to connect the intangible memories to the tangible image.

Throughout this process, I have uncovered the fragility of memories, and while our subconscious is constantly fed new memories, some are not imprinted quite as deeply as others.

‘Visibilis’ is a body of work created using moving images. It seeks to explore the complex, intangible connections between thought and feeling – what is visible and what remains unseen. Dealing with the presentation of perception as the background of experience which guides every conscious action.

Through surrealist, phenomenology-focused visual forms, it attempts to create moving images that transcend the simply physical, inviting the audiences to look closer, to inspect the details, so as to unlock the secrets contained within. The work seeks to provide a portal into other worlds, for viewers to see what lies beneath on a deeply personal yet universal level. The starkly visible nature of the pieces invites viewers to look, to be looked at, and to reflect upon what lies in between.
